have to disagree,Kaseimartin, but your are entitled to your view of course. Ms. Stritch is the mistress of timing and can sell a song even though she would admit she is no great singer have looked at Angela Lansbury doing the same song and there is no comparison. Ms. Stritch wins by a country mile.

Just because it's Elaine Stritch does not excuse this performance. This is lazy, turgid, and, because she refuses to "act" and just be "Elaine Stritch", decidedly one-note, shallow, self-serving, and only of interest to her fans. It seems like she never ended her one-woman show. Lansbury, Resnick, and Gingold at least added depth, character, nuance, and actual skill. This is pointless.
Unfortunately, Stritch has devolved into a caricature of herself. It happens to most strong personalities.

@BrochtrupBean "Liasins" Hahahahahaha!!!!

I prefer Regina Resnik in the 1990 revival. She actually sings the song, and beautifully.

almost...but not quite...Stritch lacks subtlety and refinement....Armfeldt was not an ageing bawling broadway baby

Stritch and Sondheim at their best. Too bad we don't get the whole song. Is there a dvd of A Little Night Music coming out?

I'm surprised at how well she works in this role. I was a little worried even though I love her, but she's great!

I love her humor better in this but i like Angela Lansbury's voice better, but both are beautiful

Interestingly all 4 majors actresses who did this role had a different take on It, all of which were equally valid:
Gingold (the originator of the role in the 70's and for those who are not sure who she is, the actress who played the grandmother in Gigi - another role of old courtisane) very much the wise matriarch;
Resnick (an opera singer but with formidable stage presence) regretting the times past, including the lust of it;
Lansbury (which I saw live) sorrowful, full of regrets but whil
@baribearsd Please consider more about creativity. True theater is about collobration and interpretation. The composer and the lyricist set a course for the performer, and in this and many other musicals, it's a damn good course. But then the realm of individual artistry must be embraced and respected. So much on YouTube seems like a competition like "American Idol" with instant decisions -- losers and winners. Open your mind, heart and soul. We don't need contests, nor bitterness. We need joy!

Heh. A clever (and respectful) shout-out to Sondheim's rhyming prowess. I love it. Excellent and unique.
