Kamel was for many years with Cypress Semiconductors, where he participated in the investment in SunPower in 2001. In 2006, he founded his company, Calisolar, which now has a R&D center in Berlin Germany, and closed recently a $100M round of financing for creating a 80 Megawatt fab here in Sunnyvale.
Dr Ounadjela has spent over 25 years building on a long track record of product development in the semiconductor, disk drive and photovoltaic industries. Kamel has been working on device physics, manufacturing management, technology transfer and engineering processes where he brought multiple scale-up experience along with specific technical expertise. Kamel has been involved in all aspects of the manufacturing value-stream where leading projects included transferring products from R&D through Pilot phase into Production. Prior to founding CaliSolar, Kamel was Senior Director at Cypress Semiconductor where he was leading the development and pilot production of a new memory chip successfully commercialized to the market. Prior to Cypress, he worked at Veeco Instruments as the director of data storage where he contributed to the development and manufacturing of a new set of deposition tools which opened a large revenue stream for the company. Prior to Veeco Instruments, Kamel was director of research at the CNRS in France where he led a group of scientists and engineers in the field of nanotechnologies, semiconductor processes and spin electronics devices for memory and solar applications. Before that, Kamel has worked at IBM San Jose, where he contributed to the development and the production of a new generation of read heads for the disk drive industry. Kamel has an engineering degree and a PhD in Material Science from the University of Paris. He also holds several patents, has authored over 200 major technical publications and has edited three books.
Calisolar, a private company currently in commercial production, is vertically integrated with expertise in silicon purification, ingot production, wafering and cell processing. The company has manufacturing, operations and R&D facilities in the U.S., Canada, and Germany. Customers are located in all major solar markets around the world.
In the face of increased pollution, a finite supply of oil and natural gas, and a continued dependence on imported oil, Calisolar is committed to making solar energy cost-competitive with conventional fossil fuels. Calisolar is leveraging its intellectual property, new technologies and innovative manufacturing processes to enable the growth of cost-effective, large-scale solar electricity implementations. Solar module manufacturers can now build industry-standard, grid-tied modules using Calisolar cells with average production efficiencies well above 16 percent.
