The theatrical trailer for THREE STOOGES FUN-O-RAMA (1959), a collection of Stooge two-reelers (with Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Joe Besser) offered to exhibitors to capitalize on the TV-syndication success of these short comedies. No specific titles are mentioned in the trailer or on any of the promotional material because the selection varied, depending upon what was available. No new prints were struck; instead, film exchanges would recycle previously-released 35mm prints of the Stooge Besser shorts, sending out whichever titles they had on hand. (Exhibitors could determine the running time of the show, so they could choose four, five or six shorts--or more.) Although some of the FUN-O-RAMA promotional photos featured scenes from such entries as OILS WELL THAT ENDS WELL, RUSTY ROMEOS, SWEET AND HOT, SAPPY BULL FIGHTERS and OUTER SPACE JITTERS, there was no guarantee that any of those titles would be included for a specific booking.

  • Shame that these shorts never really get seen. Besser was a funny man & I would think Moe & larry would work well with him. Thoughts!

  • My favorite Stooge shorts featuring Besser is "Quiz Whizz" and "A Merry Mix Up", overall I thought Besser was a lot better than many people gave him credit for

  • i hope the Besser short finally come to DVD

  • Yep, listed in the film credits as Don Blocker.

  • Hello kindersczenen, I think when it came to Joe Besser, he was chosen for The Stooges by Columbia, since he was already under contract to Columbia. I think Moe and Larry had very little, or no say so in that matter. When it came to Joe DeRita, he was chosen by Moe (primarily) and Larry because of his physical resemblance to Curly. With the resurgence of the Stooges popularity in the late 1950's due to TV, Moe and Larry needed another third Stooge for personal appearances and new films.

  • I agree--and not to start a flame war up in here, but I've always wanted to mention to those fans who thought Besser (and later, DeRita) were subpar, you also have to remember, Moe and Larry had the final say in who was chosen. So if any fans out there want to complain, go straight to the top--Larry and Moe!

And it's really great to see this trailer--I've never seen it before! Thanks for uploading!

  • The "goon" at 0:32 is Dan Blocker, best known as "Hoss" on Bonanza. From the brief Joe Besser period, the best short they did was probably the first,"Hoofs and Goofs"...
