Short vid of a few close-grip upright rows during 5s of my HST cycle. (I'm cutting and strength is down; by the look of my gut, I still have a long way to go!) Vid is of my third work set of 5 reps followed by another slightly heavier set with even sloppier form!

I have to do upright rows with a narrow grip - any wider and my right shoulder complains.

  • i heard this exercise can get you injuried easily.

  • Shoulder nerve impingement is certainly possible in some people when performing upright rows. This tends to be more likely if you lift the bar higher than necessary. Lifting it to the base of the sternum is plenty high enough to get good delt activation. Actively shrugging can help too. I find wider grip URs quite uncomfortable but using a narrow grip is fine for me.

  • are u doing Max OT? if yes how was your experience with it

  • No, I've pretty much been sticking to HST type load progressions for a couple of years to add some bulk and then I used Lyle McD's UD2 to strip off a load of fat. Got down to under 190lb at around 8% bf. Now it's time to eat, eat and eat some more and see if I can get that 500lb deadlift I've been promising myself.

  • Oh, I was dieting down when I took this vid but I was way over 8%bf at the time. Check out the HST site if you're interested. There's loads of great info to be had there in the FAQs.
