ATTENTION MC500 PEOPLE:
Minecraft is currently moving their servers and have still not finished, so in the last couple days, Minecraft500 has been very slow. You will have to try many times to log in but once you log in, it should be fine. When Minecraft's done fuckin around (probably by tomorrow), we should be back to normal. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it's not our fault and we can't do anything about it at the moment. As compensation for something we didn't do, we're giving everyone 5 free days on the server! So enjoy.

Minecraft500 isn't free for the same reason that McDonalds isn't free, because there's costs (server/website hosting) and labor (managing the server scripts and whatnot) involved. However, I personally think $5 a month is nothing compared to the amount of fun you'll have playing with us on the server.
