White people are so ridiculous sometimes.... Who cares? Lol

everything about the 70's was so different. the award shows, the music, the clothes, the hair. makes me feel old.

@Preirin Thankfully,JD was on tour in Australia,& accepted his award via satellite. He didn't see Charlie do it at the time.Charlie's son has a website where he says it was a joke that went wrong & he did try to visit JD in Aspen & apologize but JD was on tour.I have no doubt that JD would have forgiven him & not dwelt on it. John's star pretty much eclipsed Charlie's by then so I doubt it bothered him too much.ONJ ,being Australian got similar nastiness from Nashville for her nomination in '74.

Don't know how some folks don't consider John a country artist(he always said his music was more "western" than "country") when we have such a fine representative like Taylor Swift! Yikes, she's about as country as white bread. John Denver was such a talent.

What happened to John... the humiliation he must have felt when Charlie Rich, old and spiteful as he was, burned the envelope. Denver may not have been a ‘Country and Western” star, as some have claimed… and that may be accurate. And if so, a good thing – as what happened to country music throughout the 80’s and 90’s was an abomination. It’s only recently that we’re seeing true talent and good music emerge in the genre again.

It's definitely open for debate that John Denver was a country artist, and as much as I love his music and God bless him, he was a great songwriter, but there's no question either Merle Haggard or Charlie Rich(R.I.P.) deserved the Best Male Country Vocalist award 10 times more.

@RockinEd neither one was dominating the country charts as in the years previous to these AMAs,but they still kept going steadily.
Having never truly liked country, I can honestly say he was my inspiration to learn how to play guitar, ‘Country Roads’ being the first piece I ever learned. And I actually get quite upset when I think about how unfairly he was treated by his peers simply because they didn’t want to share the spotlight.

Just popped in to see this again. It's sweet how basically softspoken John actually is.And no wonder he got depressed later on. it must have been hard to go from being THE biggest pop star in the world to disappearing off the radio.Nobody can maintain that level of stardom, but the drop must have been hard.At least he didn't live to see all his money disappear in the Bernie Madoff scandal.I don't think his poor weary heart could have taken it after everything else.Man,he deserved better.

Such a funny video. You should put Robbie Rich/ cousin Oliver in the video tags. i've told a few Brady fans to look at this vi. Too cute!
