NBC Nightly News: Underused MidAmerica Airport

NBC Nightly News revives The Fleecing of America.

Despite servicing only one flight each week, and none from major carriers, the MidAmerica St. Louis Airport has been the recipient of millions of dollars in federal funds. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

It's not completely pointless, I heard last year that Boeing bought some land and set up a small plant near the airport. 100 new jobs in the area, not much but hey that's better than nothing! The airport is a huge waste of tax payers money, but it would be an even bigger waste to tear the thing down.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that the review by J.W. Boyle & Co. found that MidAmerica St. Louis Airport had an operating loss of $11.9 million in 2010. That's 4.3 percent less than the previous year.

I could see how 9/11 and American merging with TWA in the 90s affecting potential business at Mid America, but the real reason no airline is in that airport is no one wants to drive 30 miles east of St Louis to fly. If it was the only major airport it would make sense to use Mid America like the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport, but when you have a big airport in the city, it’s pointless to drive on average 30+ miles to get there.
