the focus of ballet is far too great on technique. look at her she is beautiful! so much carisma, expression, true dance quality. and yet i sit here judging technique, like everyone else watcing this video, in my head critisising turnout etc, as we have all be trained to do as dancers. I hate the way i percieve ballet as a result of those around me, and only wish i was older so i could have lived through a generation where artistry came before technique.

Still today there are dancers, who adore dancing and put their everything into it, who have similar 'bad feet' and low extensions to Fonteyn. And they will be told they are bad dancers now, because of that technique. It's a shame because we could have a real variety of ballerinas if there were still that focus on musicality and expression. :(

if her technique was truly that horrendous, she wouldn't be able to nail those perfect balances without wobbling or anything else that is very common to see in the rose adagio.

She is so sprightly and teenage-like here. Fonteyn has her detractors from those who admire modern technique, but I find her musicality and line so spot-on here. Here, you do not find the exaggerated attitude-derriers - just perfect geometric symmetry, nothing more or less. She also does not exaggerate the music, she gives just what is called for. It is that quintessential smartness and reserve that makes Dame Margot Fonteyn so brilliantly British and unsurpassable in this role.

I say one of the greatest, since I have so many favorite Auroras and can't choose just one. And regardless of what their detractors say, her petit allegro was excellent, and every dancer knows petit allegro is the most difficult of ballet techniques, much more so than all the big jumps and flashy turns.

We had the joy of watching Fonteyn dance (often with Rudolf Nureyv) many times at the Royal Opera House in London. She is part of my youth and I wouldn't trade in a second of any memory I have of her. Apart from being a wonderful dancer she was a radiant person whose ability to act a part shone out, reaching all the way up to "the Gods" where we were sitting. She received standing ovations and tsunamis of flowers after every performance. I still love her dearly.

Dancers these days are so boring - they're like clones of each other. Fonteyn was so unique.

I totally agree with you! Nowadays people just look for those ballerinas with legs up to their noses..
