  • is it true tht the old fashion spurs tht were used in the wild west tht are strictly illegal ?

  • @horselover3476 As far as legal or illegal, in the early to late 1800s, there wasn't anyone who was monitoring cruelty to animals as a whole. But smart horsemen knew how to get the most out of an animal, and it wasn't via pain and suffering.

  • You mentioned some advice from a site on this video for dull sided horses. I didn't catch that site even though I replayed it three times. I'm working with my husband's paint and he is oblivious to leg ques, he knows them but it's just like you have to kick the tar out of him to get him to go. Not abusive or anything but more then just leg pressure like I prefer and compared to my QH it feels like I'm beating him up. thank you

  • @mythicalgriffons

Mike Kevil. His website is "startingcolts (dot) com"

  • Thanks for you time and support, I'll let you know how our endeavor turns out. Oh, and if you see anything in the videos that I can improve on as well, please let me know. ;P

  • My pleasure. And when I get in from working later on this afternoon I'll try to take more of a peek and see if there's anything constructive I can offer. :D

  • That makes sense...

  • The "wall" that a spur provides really isn't much of a wall. I've been bolted on by big horses that could brace their neck against a one-rein stop. They didn't care about the discomfort of that bit in their mouth. They also won't care about the spur. Sometimes it can also cause a horse to "up the ante" and throw in something else, like a buck, a rear, or something else. Take the muscle out of the equation, because humans lose every time. Go to that brain and get him going in there! :D

  • Ground poles are exactly what I mean. Moving logs on a drag line, stepping over 8" poles, etc. Horses sometimes really need motivation to understand WHY listening to your cues is so important. For some horses, it's trail riding, for others it's jumps. Find what works for you both and you guys will be doing awesomely together. Get his brain in the game and keep it fun and recreational for the BOTH of you! :D And keep your videos coming!

  • We weren't having any issues till he realized that I was going to try it again.

Not quite sure what you mean with setting up a goal. I understand it a bit, but not fully. Do you mean a mental goal or something physical (like ground poles... etc.)? Or am I totally missing the point?
