But the rematch system is managed though the Pokegear, so, for example, you can go back and talk to Youngster Joey and register him in your Pokegear and he'll call you every so often for a rematch. Same with a few other trainers. Some will, instead, call you about rare Pokemon that show up, like Fisherman Ralph on Route 32 on the path across the water. Plus, a trainer after the Union Cave, Hiker Anthony on Route 33 will call about Dunsparce in Dark Cave.

They have rematches in Crystal with the Pokegear. That's how you get the call from Joey where he talks about his Rattata. And, also, the famous Youngster Joey is from Gen. II. All of the others are imposters.
