"Occupy Wall Street" Protest in NYC Turns Violent:
Police in New York have reportedly made dozens of arrests and have been using pepper spray as they try to stop anti-Wall Street activists from storming barricades blocking them off from the Stock Exchange.
The demonstrations had been peaceful but turned violent as the night went on. Police have reportedly deployed orange netting to contain protesters.
Meanwhile, in downtown Seattle police have arrested around 20 demonstrators who refused to remove their tents from Westlake Park, the Associated Press reports.
A huge anti-Wall Street protest in New York is growing as activists join forces with students and unions. Demonstrations are multiplying in the US against the corporate greed that's blamed for leading the country to the brink of economic collapse.
The demonstration in New York is gaining unprecedented momentum as thousands of people, including members of several major unions, have joined the "Occupy Wall Street" movement.
The Transport Workers Union, one of the largest unions in New York City accounting for 36,000 employees, has joined the rally. Teachers are also on the streets together with the nation's largest nurses' movement.
Students have walked out of universities in New York and throughout the country to join the demonstrations. About 1,000 students have marched through lower Manhattan to join crowds who had camped out in Zuccotti Park.
"This is Cairo! This is Tunisia! This is a movement taking place not only in the US, but one taking place all over the world! Enough with the Wall Street bailouts! We will win!" are some of the things that the demonstrators have been saying,
Anti-Wall Street protests -- now in their third week -- are continuing to spread across the country. Some of those marching have issued a statement claiming to represent 99 per cent of the population against the country's richest one per cent.
There are two grievances that unite all of the protesters: The first one is that they are frustrated with the wealth disparity in the US. And the second one is that they are very frustrated with corporate influence over US politics.
Frustrated Americans have been waiting for the economy to get better and have been waiting to reap some kind of benefits from the bailouts following 2008's financial crisis.
The aggravation is increasing as annoyed American come together to demand that their elected officials change the system and make sure that things become a little fairer for ordinary Americans.
"We don't want a model that is creating more pain more suffering more corruption and now people are taking a stand," said protester Rosita Wandella.
"We are the 99," said another protester. He and many other demonstrators are worried that the one percent, who control most of the nation's wealth, have gained a stranglehold over the US government.
"Alexander Hamilton referred to the people he was so afraid of as the great beast, and the great beast has awakened," said Terry Hatter, a substitute teacher in the crowd.
From the East Coast to the West Coast and a growing number of places in between, a collective anger is unifying people.
In the Windy City, a group has been demonstrating outside of the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago for more than a week.
In Boston, a tent city in the heart of the Financial District means occupiers can voice their discontent with corporate greed day and night. Despite dozens of arrests, demonstrators intend to show that democracy does not end at the ballot box.
Families have also been marching in Denver and San Francisco demanding radical change
According to the Occupy Together website, protests are being organized in more than 100 cities.
"The points that people are standing behind are worth a revolution," said protester Kaitlin Weichsel.
"I believe their time is up," said Wandella. "I think that the world is recognizing that it doesn't work," she added.
Despite mainstream media downplaying -even ridiculing the movement -- supporters have faith the message will be understood.
"You saw what happened in London. They tried to make it out of a bunch of people who were just bad apples. That's humanity. Humanity has an angst about it. Something is wrong," said protester Troy Casey.
Already bruised by soaring unemployment, poverty and foreclosures, the middle class are now being told to tighten their belts, leading many Americans to finally find their voices
"The crowds will be getting bigger," said Hatter. "It looks like it is spreading throughout the country. They had the Arab spring and hopefully we have a US autumn," Hatter added.

  • Corporate greed only exists when there is no competition. If a company were to raise prices or lower quality for its consumers, the consumers would flock to their competitors. The only possibility of an economy being run by greed is an economy where the government taxes the businesses and uses that money to destroy competition by creating their own jobs, funding bailouts, or placing regulations on businesses they do not want to succeed.

  • @stabuwithaspo0n Badass! And here I was worried.

  • they should publish a record of where every dollar politicians accept money comes from.. people need to know who and what funds these elected people.....i think if people knew what the actual agenda is for alot of government.. they would be enraged..and we already are getting a baby taste of whats to come..the occupy movement may not be as well organized as people want.. well GET INVOLVED..at least these americans are doing something
