Edward VII (1841 -- 1910), King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions and Emperor of India 1901-1910, heir of Queen Victoria and first monarch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He gave his name to an age, particularly the fashionable trends of well-to-do gentlemen. He expanded and modernized the Royal Navy, allied with France and used diplomacy to encircle Germany, the King predicting that they would provoke a war.
I love this late King. Okay, he was a terrible husband, but a great monarch. He understood the meaning of pomp and circumstance and re-invented the trooping of the colours as well as the state opening of Parliament. He was so popular that he became the first King to lie in state.
