This tune comes from Frank Converse's "Old Cremona Songster," published in 1863. Frank Converse was just 24 years old, and already recognized as one of the leading banjo players in America. In addition to performing on the minstrel stage, he was quite passionate about teaching and "elevating" the banjo to an equal status with instruments like the guitar and the violin. Charley Fox was also a widely recognized minstrel banjoist and comedian, and the partnership of Fox and Converse was assuredly a successful one.
