They were defeated by combined forces. Mind you, three of the world's (back then) most powerful nations were involved in this war; the US of A, Russia and Great Britain, the military superpowers of that time. If it took al three of them to overcome Germany, what do you think would've happened if America would've gone at it alone? It takes little deduction. They'd have lost.

You Americans were lucky Germany was fighting a war on two fronts, or they'd have pushed you right back into the sea. Their war machine was far superior. You got lucky, that's all.

The reasons the Dutch were stomped fyi were the fact that they 1) were gravely outnumbered, 2) had a trained, but (compared to Germany) underarmed military force, 3) were caught completely by surprise.
