auxiliary heater - webasto.
I have same problem. First time on traffic light i thought car is burning.
On service they told me that i have to buy new which cost more then 700 EUR than i pull out fuse number 12 i think and it does not smoke any more...
It takes a bit more to get working temperature on cold period but there is no ugly smoke and investment of 1/10 worth of the car.

lol i had same problem it was definatly the TURBO even after being told is was not by many mechanics! they said '' it should be blue smoke if it was the turbo mate'' hahaha shut up ! and to mickymoose76 below who say's they are terrible engines? these engines are one of the best they use this same engine in galaxy's seat alhambra's. vw golf,vw passat, audi A4,and A6 and some more they are very econmical and reliable. peace pls check out my page

looks like the dousing pump in the secondary water heater is failing. It's not a dead turbo (grey smoke is a combustion issue on diesel engines, turbo failure burns oil and gives a heavy blue smoke).

there is a auxiliary heater in every sharan, sometimes it doesn´t work right then you have this nice fog machine :-)
-
you know, there a small engine, or i dunno the perfect word for it, with what you can heat the car, without the real engine. it works with Diesel also. that's the problem..
