I've heard faulty automatic transmissions sound like that. Was there a road on a hill side in the vicinity?

@deguello66 Yes, but if you were there you could tell it wasn't a car. Plus the road is about 1/2 a mile away, so the noise wouldn't have appeared as loud as it was where we were. You would have had to have been there, the recording did it no justice. It was loud, and it was obvoius that it was not a car.
