Zhivago bids Lara goodbye and strains to see her disappear into the distance. He runs and claws at the window to see into the future, but cannot as it has escaped him

Lara, (the present), bids Zhivago (the past) goodbye. The mandolin is symbolic of the dreams of Mother Russia which Lara carries into the future as a memory of the past. Zhivago cannot go with Lara as he lives in the past and she, in the present. The future will not accept them both.
