I agree with you that the adverts that come up before the video even starts are ridiculous and just generally bad, but the small banner ads that come up during the video aren't that bad

YouTube does not get money from them ads, the uploader does. The uploader chooses to put those ads up. I dont have a problem with banner ads or text ads, but ads in videos? Thats outrageous. And flash ads as well, absolutely ridiculous. There are people out there with older computers that end up having their browsers crash cause a freaking page has 5 flash ads all speaking at the same time! Hell, if it weren't for advertising, 56k connections would still be pretty useful today.

i am completely against the over-abundance of advertising in the media today, but on youtube it is understandable as they need to make money some way and clicking a small X button on the unintrusive adverts is the least we can do as youtube provides us with awesome videos so we let them advertise to make some money in return
