Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, by Halsey Stevens
I. Allegro Moderato

This piece followed "Jauchzet" from Bach's Cantata No. 51, and for some reason, it took me a few staves to get the ol' chops adjusted from picc to B-flat. Great piece though.

  • hey good job dude, very nice sound :)

  • Thanks man.

  • What equipment do you use? I'm 14 and I love the 1 1/2 B mouthpiece, but my teacher thinks I'm too young!

  • Well, everyone's chops are different. I had pretty tough chops, but I still played a 3C all the way through high school. I'd recommend you'd not go any bigger than that until you are completely done growing. Take care.

  • I enjoyed your performance. Very nice work, from one trumpeter to another. I love this movement of this work.

  • Appreciate it, my friend. Most people don't have a clue what a beast that is to put together with a pianist. ;-)

  • Great chops man

  • @WaltersQuincy hey, well, your message was sent 2 years ago, so i am guessing you are 16, i am 16 also, some advise i learned on trumpet mouthpiece sizes from my trumpet/horn teacher; use the standerd 7c for training and then work your way up. a 7c has a richer sound than a 3c, however a 3c makes the overtones closer together, therefore making it easier to hit a high note. my advise is to build up your lips and then worry about mouthpieces. Just a suggestion. =)

  • Where can you find this piece

  • So inspiring!

I'm 14 and I'm my private school district's section leader. There are so many musicians to look up to and your performance made me want to go practice my trumpet pieces at that moment! :)

The pianist was also excellent. (I also play piano) You make a great duo.

  • Marvelous, sensitive playing. I enjoy this piece very much. I am a pianist and played the Stevens trombone sonata a bazillion years ago.

    Who is the wonderful pianist?

  • bravo to both the soloist and the pianist! you're ensemble sounds great! the piano score presents some interesting technical challenges to the collaborative pianist and that mixed meter and the assymetrical time signatures can be really disorienting and you both not only nailed it but made it a lovely musical performance. really really nice.

  • Very nice performance, great control and musicality in the performance, I am impressed. The Halsey Steven's Sonata is not an easy piece of music to perform. Is this man playing professionally now?

  • I love the sound of the trumpet. Ah it must be in one of my songs. RIGHT NOW.

  • Beautiful sound man. I'm gearing up to play the Stevens for my college audition, its a fun piece

  • wow nice lower register..
