@fdobbs37 It was also in 'How to marry a millionaire' (1953)

This motif was whistled in the opening to "Where the Pavement Ends" as a guy steps from the pavement into the street filled with water and debris.

you should all watch the 1931 movie " street scene " where this piece was actually from! a very young sylvia sidney, and the great beulah bondi ...truly one of the greatest cinematic works of all time. directed by king vidor.
and yes, the music against a manhattan skyline is perfect. clearly where woody allen got his inspiration for Manhattan...using Gershwin.

@fdobbs37 It was also present in Cry of the City (1948)

Worst performance of that piece I've ever seen - and this orchestra is usually excellent...

Street scene was written in the 30s and (arguably) became a kind of theme song for New York. As for the appearance around 1947, it played a big part of the 1953 "How to Marry a Millionaire" movie starring Marilyn Monroe.

Crikky, is this one dreadful orchestra. Ditto, the conductor.

@fdobbs37 It is like the song Unchained Melody in that nobody knows where it came from. Street Scene came from a movie called Street Scene and Unchained Melody came from a movie called Unchained. Both great movies and songs.

This theme was in the soundtrack of "Kiss of Death" (1947). I think it was in another film from that period. Anyone know?
Remember this is a rehearsal.
