There have been four bridges crossing Sturgeon Bay waters at the town of Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. Video shows where the old Ahnapee And Western Railway used to cross, almost all the railway is gone, only a long pier still sticks out into the bay. The Michigan Street bridge is next, it is a steel girder bridge currently undergoing a rehab and is in the up/open position. Next we have the Oregon Avenue bridge and we get to see it going up for a boat, then a trip across. Last is the state highway bypass "Bay View" bridge. Here we take a two way trip and get to look out towards the canal and Lake Michigan, then coming back we look over towards town and get to see the many boats that ply the bay waters. In the 1960's a ship hit the Michigan bridge and no traffic was allowed across. A barge was anchored in the ship canal and roads were bulldozed through the woods to allow traffic to cross the canal. A pedestrian access was set up then on the old railroad bridge.

  • STREET, not avenue.

  • I get that messed up all the time! Sturgeon Bay was my Mom's hometown, I'm from the Chicago area ( like Mich Ave in Chicago). Another quirky thing I do is to refer to the West side of Sturgeon Bay as "Sawyer." My Grandma grew up on Maple, and as late as 1987 she was still saying Sawyer. Personally, I miss the day when I could walk down Madison and go into Warner's, LaVine's, Mac's, or Peterson's! That was back in the day when you could easily tell who was local and was not!!!

  • I made the correction to "Street" in the main caption. I want to Thank-You again for pointing that out.

  • Im an ironworker on the bridge renovation. Its a job thats keeping me busy, and also keeping my blood-lead levels very high!

  • I remember so many of the bridge re-paintings. I sort of remember the work being done at night with the bridge closed to all traffic. That would have been before the second bridge was built. I feel for you on the lead!!! That kind of makes me wonder how much paint is mixed with the muck under the bridge!

  • Actually there was another bridge back in 1960. It was a temporary one built down by the canal after a freighter collided with the highway bridge and put it out of commission.

  • I never knew a RR ran up that way...Very nice video and good info...Thanx for sharing it...I was just up there and we wanna so go back up there...Very nice town and yet so much to do in so lil time, we were only up there for a day...Could of used like 2-3 days.......Keep up the good work on these videos

  • Busy right now but the yard has just announced 400+ layoffs coming up. The new Italian Corp that now owns the yard is "actively" pursuing new business. If you are interested the story was in both the Door County Advocate and the Green Bay Press Gazette. I hope that they will keep going. I remember the glory days when they started building the "1000 footers".
