The Black Swan is common in the wetlands of south western and eastern Australia and adjacent coastal islands. They tend to avoid the northern tropics. In 1864, the Australian Black Swan was introduced to New Zealand as an ornamental waterfowl. Populations are now common on larger coastal or inland lakes of New Zealand. Black swans live in lakes, rivers and swampland, which can be fresh, salt or brackish water. Black swans are monogamous and often have the same mate for life. The breeding season is from February through September. The Black Swan is a vegetarian. Food consists of algae and weeds, which the bird obtains by plunging its long neck into water up to 1 m deep. Occasionally birds will graze on land, but they are clumsy walkers. The Black Swan is protected under the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Act. © www.stockshot.nl
