Okay, what I don't get about this, is, how is "Tesco" a new start for Gateshead???? Why demolish such a landmark for a supermarket? I agree with the guy at 1:03. If there was a referendum, I'm positive at least 70/80% of people would of voted not to demolish the car park.

@M51057 It was never liked by the majority of Gateshead's residents, me included. And it was always underused as a car park. The people of Gateshead were never asked if they wanted such a structure, but they were asked if it should stay or go. And thank god, the people had the common sense to say 'get rid'. It may be missed, for a while, but not fondly remembered.
I am dubious though as to what will replace it. Another generic shopping centre with a 30 year lifespan. Why not something tasteful?

Think it should have been preserved for future generations to see - luckily common sense has made sure that Park Hill Estate in Sheffield has'nt suffered the same fate - I do realise that social conditions were'nt always the best re living in and around these structures but I just think they should be left standing even if its just the bare superstructure as monuments and reminders of their era - imagine the outcry if they were to demolish McAlpines Glenfinnan viaduct

Think it's disgraceful that this icon of sixties Britain is getting demolished-regardless of whether it was used as a film location or not it was still a masterpeice of its era as others have mentioned just so another shrine to money - another Tesco - can be erected -am sure these supermarket giants grease the palms of council planning committees-money talks and it always has and always will be the way - just glad I made the effort a few years ago and went up and took plenty of photo's of it

Scheduled for demolition in the new year? That should have been 18 months ago. They are doing it now.

It went down today.

In what direction are we looking at 1.03?

Who's that little kid being interviewed? He needs some kleenex and a styptic pencil.

I live in Gateshead and will be appy to see it go. It has been falling apart for years, and now demolition seems to have ground to a halt. The Car Park is still standing.
As for the "Road Show" that the kid mentioned, this was the first I heard about it.
The intention is that they knock down the car park and build a new Tesco store there, with the Indoor Market going where the present Tesco is. There are rumours that Tesco intend to close the present store before opening the new one. Bad move.
Can anyone in Gateshead give an up date on the car parks situation. I want to visit it before it goes

I live in Gateshead and uploaded this video. The situation now is it's on its last legs. It's still standing, while they demolish the shopping centre around it, then they're going to knock it down. I don't know when but if you want to see what's left of it, you'd better hurry. You'll not be able to enter it, though, as it's cordoned off.
