The part of the story that is never told about is the racism that was involved in the destruction of Gary. When Richard Hatcher was elected mayor of the city back in 1968, white flight took place. Homeowners as well as business owners moved out of the city drastically reducing the tax base of the once great city. Without the previous commerce, poverty and ruin put the city in a bad situation and the present conditions are the end result.

@workthemeat gary has good neigborhoods and it has bad neighborhoods. but the good neigborhoods are hardly ideal.

Its a shame that most of Gary's historical buildings and area now look shitty as hell.. But Gary could once be a beautiful and prosperous city as it once was, once they get non-shitty ass mayors (cough cough Rudy Clay cough cough) because he really fucked things up. Crooked ass politician...

Not really. This happened as a result of the collapse of the US Steel market starting in the 1960's

Gary was one of the first steel producing communities to fail. Most of the places in this video have been abandoned for more then 35 years. It was a sign of things to come. Its to bad nobody took notice.

Yeah, thanks tunnels. Our local newspaper ran an article on Gary about 10 or so years ago, (when Gary had the highest murder rate)the article also mentioned what a great city it was in the 20's and 30's (I think!) so it has always held a fascination for me.
Is their any industry left there?
Is Gary as bad as it was 10 years ago?

They are trying to redevelop parts of it. The city is broke. I first went there in 2004 and I was surprised at the lake of people. I guess its not as bad as it was. I have never had any problems ever being there. There is very little industry there.
