Thanks- a blessing to be able to see & hear her. Never occurred to me that Dr. King chose this spot because it was so meaningful to the African American community (and all Americans) due to this event, what a beautiful choice that was, and to see here Aretha singing the same piece at another landmark event in DC in 2009. Anyone who loves Anderson would also enjoy the article written about her by Langston Hughes, it's very good. Thank God for all these good people, including Mrs. Roosevelt.

Go onto your computer and go to your search engine and type in Daughters Of American Revolution wikipedia. There is a whole paragraph devoted to this incident. Lets just say that the great Eleanor Roosevelt rubbed salt into their faces by handing them her letter of resignation to which she was a member of. Even more so, look up Marian Anderson on the wikipedia and read about her life and the awards and accolades that we're bestowed upon her. Amazing !!!

@jpell225 You do understand it was the DAR that blocked her form singing? The DAR mainly at that time (1939)was a Northeastern group, not Southern, Western or even Mid Western group. It had chapaters nation wide, but was strongest in the NE.
Glenn Beck would have been against them then, as many Americans were. There was over 75,000 in the Mall when she sang, and many today still don't understand King came to give his great speech there because of this event.
