The vision of Gilberto Tethere
November 2009. Hundreds of thousands of rural families run out of food in Mozambique. It is the start of the hunger period, just like every year. And it is getting worse because of the climate change. That is tragic.
Gilberto Tethere from Cabo Delgado invented the Zero Emission Fridge for Rural Africa (ZEFRA) by reconstructing an expensive metal silo using only bamboo and clay. And he says he will not die before seeing his innovation being disseminated and becoming known in all Mozambique and beyond its borders. That is his story.
Helvetas Mozambique seeks to promote the ZEFRA to establish community-owned seed banks linked with a community-based seed multiplication system to disseminate improved crop varieties and increase food security - focusing particularly on the most resource-poor and vulnerable groups. That is our project.
A Mozambique in which every family has a fridge full of food at any time of the year, no matter who they are, where they live or how poor they are, and a calendar without hunger period. That is the vision of Gilberto Tethere which inspires us.
The World Bank Development Marketplace as a platform to find the necessary partners and support to make this dream come true. That is our hope and commitment. Thank you to the DM team for this incredible opportunity.
