Frederick Pischke has worked on water and climate issues at community, national, international, and global levels. Here, Frederik describes how water and climate change have become a conjoined theme connecting the many approaches to sustainable development and environmental protection. From farmers in Bolivia to water monitoring systems in Ethiopia to managing relationships between parts of the UN, Frederik has seen many facets of water, climate change, and development. Now working closely with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), his was also a key member of UN Water, a relatively new part of the United Nations family devoted to coordinating more than two dozen branches of the UN involved with water. Spanning environmental protection, cities and urban planning, water and sanitation, agriculture, medicine, and research, UN Water had the onerous task of trying to make diverse agencies develop a coherent strategy for water and water management. Climate change — and especially climate change adaptation — was one of the key themes that bound together these disparate groups.
