Nightly, in Central Texas, Mexican free-tail bats that hide out during the day under bridges and in caves and tunnels, come out to forage during the night. Especially on clear nights, and with the right radar settings, you can watch their flights for hours. Here is what I recorded on Tuesday, August 30, 2011.

  • I thought I'd add a few more items about the bats.

    1. This is happening every night. Plainly visible on radar as long as there's no storms competing for the radar.

    2. Yes, as some people have mentioned, the swarm from McNeil bridge in Round Rock does show a much bigger radar profile than Congress Ave in Austin.

    3. I went outside and watched the sky. The bats showed up just as the radar indicated.
