If you cannot reset with the Grub menu (timeout is 0, for example), you can use a live CD or live USB to reset your forgotten password.

  • Hey can u help me... My laptop is locked :( i forgot my password but wat do u mean by saying live cd?? Wats that?? lol

  • Thank you I learned something new ^^

  • Dell Mini-9's come with Ubuntu pre-installed & as usual Dell's implemented their proprietary twist, hence "Dellbuntu". The jacked OS renders Recovery Mode inaccessible!

But I found that by "tapping the Escape & Enter keys in rapid succession" I'd see the recovery menu flash by very quickly & after a few tries I was able access the menu & select recovery mode & proceed with the normal Linux password removal steps.

I hope this helps the next Guy who finds himself locked out of his Delbuntu

  • Hold the escape key as it boots & you'll see a menu, select recovery mode & make sure to select the root account.

Then type in "passwd XXXX" & hit enter.(XXXX is the user-name you want to reset)

Next You'll be prompted for a new password,so type it in and hit Enter, then You'll be asked to confirm, so do it again. Note you'll see no text as you type in your new passwords! Next type Exit to return to the recovery menu & select "Resume Normal Boot" & you're done!

  • I learned a few good things from your video ! Thanxs

  • easy to understand, in case I ever have to do this. Thanks
