'White Earth Melting' is a short film about three students' Greenland icecap expedition. Peggy Russell, Annika Metua, and Susan Smirk were the lucky winners of a trip to Greenland via the UK, as part of the Freemasons BIG Science Adventure 2007 -- an annual DVD competition for year 11-13 students.

This short documentary, by film maker Jinty MacTavish, shows the girls in a remote town of Kulusuk, where the dramatic site of icebergs calving from the glacier can be seen. Then to the larger coastal town of Tasiilaq where the group farewelled New Zealand adventurers Graham Charles and Marcus Waters on a 900km journey -- by kayak and kite -- across the country's wilderness of snow and ice. A boat trip then takes the team to Ikateq, a small abandoned hunting village that is a stark illustration of the effects of climate change on the local communities in Greenland.

YOU TOO CAN HAVE A Freemasons BIG Science Adventure! If you are a year 11-13 student, all you need to do is form a group of three, accompanied by a teacher, and make a five minute DVD on the theme of Darwin and evolution. Simply visit http://www.rsnz.org/events/bigsci/2008/ to find out all the information on how you can win a two week trip to the UK!

  • Here we have experts on climate change on the basis of a Summer holiday . The Planet is now cooling abruptly.

  • My understanding is that the Vikings were farming in that area.

  • Hopscottch: But ... I'm confused now. Isn't littering the foundation of modern society? Without littering no consumption. Without consumption no money. Without money most of the people wouldnt find any meaning in their lives. I know that life is meaningless. So your claim is okay with me. But the majority of the people still live in the delusion that their live has a meaning. And it's connected to the money-god and his promises. Dont you think so?

  • thunderflash you provocator LOL

  • Its one of the reactions of global warming. The rain was causing the ice to melt. And the rain was caused by us.. human litter, and that bad air from the garbage evaporates and confuses weather. PLEASE STOP LITTERING.. its bad enough that we dont think about other animals and humans that can die year by year because of huricanes and tornados..
