Potential superpowers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potential_superpowers

The People's Republic of China receives continual coverage in the popular press of its potential superpower status, and has been identified as a rising or emerging economic and military superpower by academics and other experts.

Barry Buzan asserts that "China certainly presents the most promising all-round profile" of a potential superpower. Buzan claims that "China is currently the most fashionable potential superpower and the one whose degree of alienation from the dominant international society makes it the most obvious political challenger." However, he notes this challenge is constrained by the major challenges of development and by the fact that its rise could trigger a counter coalition of states in Asia.

Shujie Yao of Nottingham University has said that the London G-20 Summit helped to "further cement [China's] position as the world's emerging superpower by allowing it to stake out a clear leading role". He believes that "China will overtake the United States to become the world's largest economy by 2038 if current growth rates continue," and that China's nominal GDP will likely overtake that of Japan by 2009 or 2010. He argues that the credit crisis has provided China a rare chance to secure superpower status.

Parag Khanna states that by making massive trade and investment deals with Latin America and Africa, China has established its presence as a superpower along with the European Union and the United States. China's rise is demonstrated by its ballooning share of trade in its gross domestic product. He believes that China's consultative style has allowed it to develop political and economic ties with many countries including those viewed as rogue states by the United States. He states that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization founded with Russia and the Central Asian countries may eventually be the "NATO of the East". Another factor favoring China's rise is its government as Fareed Zakaria and other academics observed, China's government can do tasks such as development or dealing with a crisis faster than democracies in Europe or India.

Geoffrey Murphay's China: The Next Superpower argues that while the potential for China is high, this is fairly perceived only by looking at the risks and obstacles China faces in managing its population and resources. The political situation in China may become too fragile to survive into superpower status according to Susan Shirk in China: Fragile Superpower. Other factors that could constrain China's ability to become a superpower in the future include: limited supplies of energy and raw materials, questions over its innovation capability, inequality and corruption, and risks to social stability and the environment. Minxin Pei does not believe that China is a superpower or that it will be one anytime soon arguing that it faces daunting political and economic challenges. Amy Chua states that whether a country has enough pull to bring immigrants is an important quality for a superpower. She also writes that China lacks the pull to bring scientists, thinkers, and innovators from other countries as immigrants. However, she believes that China has made up for this with its own diaspora, saying that size and resources for them are unparalleled.

  • BRAZIL LOVES CHINA

  • China is sure enough have the military might to match other nations such as US, Russia etc, but its intention is mostly econmic power. The size of its military is primarily for their defence and not a reason for war. I will not think they will be the war agressors and let this from the past that China was never the conqueror except they rely on their military might to defend themselves and not to be occupied by anyone else!

  • Can not common only on one side, 600,000 Cambodia also killed directly by the order of Mr. Richard Nixon and Harry Kingsinger of America, and this Cambodia know nothing about the world and politic, they were just a farmer. I like to stay in between, we should look up and invent more things to ensure our human race still can survive in the next planet

  • @oporciuncula Facts: 1950, China sent troops to fight in Korea. 1959, invaded & took Tibet. 1969, killed 58 Russian soldiers in a border war. Also a border war with India. 1974, invaded VN's Paracel Islands and killed 74 Viet soldiers. 1975, sent advisors to help the Khemer Rouge killed 2 million Cambodians. 1979, sent 36 divisions (360k troops) to cross border into Vietnam. 1988, invaded VN's Spratly Islands, killed 64 Viet sailors. 1995, took Mischief Reef from Philippines.

  • @souro19 true india has the biggest percentage of arable land in the world so if any country has the biggest potential with agriculture its probably india. i have to admit my friend was in india a few years back and said the public health wasnt too good but he said the indian government is working on that alot. india very well could be a big arse superpower in the next few decades or even sooner. either way someone has to contest the power of america and atleast hindu's are peaceful people

  • @souro19 LMAO!! you fucking blackie think of dominating the world, in your dream dude.... there are many indians starving to death everyday on the streets , india is like the poorest nation on earth where barbarians are too reluctant to work and the corrupted govt could not provide a solution for the overpopulated nation and thus make it a burden to have too much brainless monkeys like you

  • I wish the USSR would get back together. America has exploded in its influence around the world and someone needs to contest it. China Is the new kid on the block- In terms of economically, they are quite possibly the new world superpower, but in terms of military, it isn't there yet, but is undeniable it is a militaristic regional superpower.

  • Thank God ..its been so LONG since a non-white country rose up as a superpower and its a good thing because their putting America at its balls ....and that would mean no Sweat Shop Banking Labour in Latin America ,or the rest of the 3rd World .....China rise up and don't let nothing get in your way

  • @whydoesmypussysmell thats cause brits are pussies!

  • @baxy11

Nostradamus said it long times ago: the people who allways had it good financially will be taken over, a new mongolian empire will rise as fast of the speed of light and will conqeur the world in years.

You are such an idiot: the chinese allready have the biggest number of soldiers, the only thing left: create up to date technical weapons and then it's a fact: china overtake the role of usa.

You americans will be working in an chinese shoecompany for 5 dollar a day and a hand of rice.

  • as with the cold war, i think china will become America's rival as the sole world leader

  • Just a matter of time. Get ready to pass the torch over USA.
