The Battle of Okeechobee Re-Enactment was held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 5 and 6 at the Battlegrounds off US Highway 441 S.E. in Okeechobee. The original battle was fought on Christmas Day 1837. It was the bloodies battle in the second Seminole War. The US Army took heavy casualties but held the ground. When the Army's numbers overwhelmed them, the Seminole warriors escaped across Lake Okeechobee in canoes. The battle delayed the advancing army long enough for the Seminole women, children and elders to escape to safety in the Everglades. The Seminole warriors joined the rest of the tribe at a prearranged meeting point. They did not mount a major attack again.
Both sides claimed victory.
The re-enactment is held each February and includes participation from the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Col. Gentry did not die during the battle, but hours after it was finished. (Sprague, pg. 212.)
