John Pilger's penetrating 1983 documentary.
Looks at worldwide propaganda surrounding the nuclear arms race, beginning with the dropping of two American atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, through the build-up of nuclear arms by Russia and America and the siting of the U.S. nuclear bases in Britain and Europe, to NATO's recent `limited' nuclear and chemical war exercise in Germany. Documentary concerning the way in which `official truth' is used to condition pe ople against the real facts of nuclear war, and the concept of more "limited" nuclear arms use.
Pilger is also a propagandist, conveniently ignores the reason for the developement of the "bomb" in the first place

Thanks for the upload. Indeed a very dark day in US history.
Although the key point not mentioned in this film was that the Americans knew that Japanese government wanted assurances over Emperor Hirohito as he was considered a living god. These assurances were only given by America after Nagasaki and so Japan duly surrendered. So effectively Hiroshima and Nagasaki were unnecessary as the Japanese wanted to surrender months before if the US actually had wished to.

@Doppelganger399 The Russians obtained the bomb thanks to espionage within the Manhattan Project. The US did all the legwork.

In a perfect world they they would have stopped after they found out the nazis had nothing but this world is not perfect too many people knew how to make the bomb including the Russians if the states had stopped only to have Russians get the bomb first our history would have unfolded very differently.

Absolutely the codenames were for security, you're right. The propaganda purpose was just a fringe benefit. If they were solely for security they could have used utterly nonsensical names like Egg Beater and Yorkshire Terrier.

Oh please, do you think that they'll spend all that money on the Manhattan Project and then not use it to kill people?

quite right, this film makes the classic research mistake, of comming to a conclusion and then looking for evedance to support it.
one fo the most one-sided TV programms I have ever seen.

the terminology used by the Manhattan Project was not for propaganda, it was for security. Groves said not to "waste a day" in the context of preventing further slaughter of U.S. lives in an invasion of the Japanese home islands. I agree that propaganda then took place, but after the war. during the war the public knew nothing of the 'gadget.'

I'm surprise there's so many views, and so few comments. Anyways, thanks for the upload.
John Pilger never fails to deliver, sounds like a great person too. But then again most Australian i know are, don't know why but they're a sympathetic bunch.
Pilger's definitely someone I'd like to meet in real life.
