  • Why can't Neil sing songs like this today. The stuff he sings now is too chopped up, no flow, words are there. These old songs move you. I wish I could find "The Drifter".

  • Written by Randy Newman. It's his most covered song. This is a superior version and one of the earliest. Diamond at the height of his powers and popularity. Great pairing. If all you know of Randy Newman is "Short People" and Disney films. You don't know him at all. A real genius. A great humorist.

  • @babalugats09 - He's also my oncologist's Brother [Dr. Alan Newman]. I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with Randy at a party given in honor of his Brother, and you're right. He's an amazing man.

  • @westy40 I agree, his best stuff was early 70s album tracks like Capt Sunshine, Canta Libre, Morningside, wonderful, maybe after that his creativity dried up dunno.

  • If only people knew of the incredible stuff Neil Diamond did from about 1966- 1974 they would be amazed! I think it was sad that he went into that glitzy vegas sequined, look, feel and sound for so many years. He is at his best doing what he originally started as.. and that was a simple singer songwriter with sparse production with his voice and guitar out front. The collaboration with Rick Rubin in 05 on his album 12 songs did bring him back to his roots.

  • went flashy vegas like elvis- hate vegas crap, talent? no denying, worth listening to? not to me Not once the jump suits, flash, and blue haired lady fans kicked in

  • @azera6878 I agree entirely

Early 70s was his great period, after that apart from 1 or 2 songs from The Jazz Singer, he's done nothing. What a contrast to the great songs then to the bland unmemorable mediocrity since.

  • @azera6878 The Drifter is here... watch?v=-te7717BFWY

  • @azera6878

I have always loved this interpretation by Neil, so wistful and moving, a classic song by Randy Newman, who's own version is equally moving

  • @babalugats09 That is true, not that he isn't a brillaint score writer, his early career just represents his genius the best. I love his first album, nothing in his career really compares to it.
