In the spirit of 'One UN', the United Nations family in India came together to mark UN Day on 24 October. UN House wore a festive look with tall banners highlighting the names and slogans of all the UN agencies. This year, the UN Information Centre (UNIC), which organizes the UN Day observance each year, presented a photo exhibition that paid tribute to India's participation in UN Peacekeeping. With almost 9000 Indian soldiers currently involved in various peacekeeping operations, it was our way of saying "Thank you, India." Visitors were welcomed to the strains of the Indian Army Band playing various armed forces compositions. This unique touch by UNIC was highly appreciated by all the visitors to the reception. The formal part of the evening was the video message from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. This was followed by remarks by the UN Resident Coordinator Patrice Coeur-Bizot who highlighted the close working together of the UN agencies in India that had once again been highlighted during the recent exercise undertaken with the Government of India in finalizing the 2013-2017 UNDAF document. UNIC Director Kiran Mehra-Kerpelman introduced a new publication produced by UNIC with support from the UN system in India. This was a MDG booklet that highlighted the successes in India of various people-centric strategies that led to bettering of MDG indicators. First copies of the booklet were presented to the Chief Guests: India's Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena and UNDP ASG Ajay Chhibber. 400 guests representing the diplomatic community, government, media, civil society and academia attended the celebration of UN Day in India.
