The Alfa Romeo flat 12 was probably the most powerful engine in the late 70's. It didn't make Brabham more competitive or better than those teams using the by then already 10 year old Cosworth V8.
The Judd V8 was a naturally aspirated engine in 1988 when the turbo cars still were dominant. The reason McLaren stuck with the turbo formula is because they knew that those would give a serious advantage over the NA engines. By 1989 turbos were banned...

@xXGreyWolf yeh, I've seen that too. The thing that always strikes me is how wide the tyres are! Imagine if it came off on a straight and it was hurtling towards you at 200mph. Definitely hold your breath time

I saw that very car in a museum in Edinburgh yesterday along with the helmet and racing suit he's wearing

The FW12C was proof that in that era, a good engine made all the difference. This was basically the same car Williams ran in 1988 except for the substitution of the Renault V10 instead of the customer Judd V8. Boutsen won one race in this car (and one in the FW13 in Australia) and Patrese had numerous podium finishes on his way to third in the driver's championship.

Unlike Niki Lauda who tested the Jaguar F1 in 2002 and came nowhere near the lap times of Irvine or Pedro de la Rosa, Jackie Stewart actually did some remarkably quick laps when he tested his Stewart-Ford in 1999.
He later admitted he could probably drive a few laps as fast as the drivers of that time, but said he wasn't fit enough to be able to keep that pace an entire race, and at his age he was very unlikely to ever be that fit.

@Fmontes ..Tell that to Colin Chapman and F1 Lotus

1989: The first year Williams used the Renault V10 engine...
He was one of the first drivers to speak up calling for the major safety features to be added in the sport. And he has not stopped,he is a legend who wants the sport to be very safe.

Are you talking about the man or team? The team is among the most successful in F1 history and absolutely dominated F1 in the late 80's and early-mid 90's. The FW-14b is the most advanced F1 car ever devised.
