If you listened to the radio in the 1980's or listen to classic rock or 80's radio stations today, chances are you have heard the mega hit "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits. This song opened with the iconic guitar solo and had Sting singing backup vocals on the track. Well in Canada there was a complaint about this section of the song:

The term "faggot" was deemed offensive and so no Canadian radio station will be allowed to play the song again. One thought came to mind immediately. Isn't this art? I thought all art was off limits to any kind of censorship.

In November, 2010, there was an art exhibit at the Smithsonian which featured a video called "A Fire In My Belly" pictured Christ with ants crawling over him. Some Christians complained and like the Dire Straits song the video was pulled from display.

In response to the Smithsonian's decision the Andy Warhol Foundation announced it would not fund any more projects at the museum. Museums in San Fransisco (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) and London (Tate Modern) decided to show the video in protest.

So radio stations all over the world should play "Money for Nothing" incessantly for the next couple of weeks in protest so listeners can still hear the song. Right?

"The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store. He's singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store. I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real...."
