Wing Chun Training

I wanted to respond to Sifu Zeigler's stance video by making a few observations of my own. I think that the first thing to remember is that the stance is the most important part of Wing Chun. All your power will come from your stance & connection to the ground.

I think that it is important to practice the stance in bare feet. When you wear shoes you heel is lifted up slightly higher then the ball of your foot. This makes getting into the Wing Chun stance artificially easy. By practicing in bare feet you get a much more "real" feel for how everything needs to work.

When I get down into my Wing Chun stance some of the things that I try to concentrate on are a feeling of squeezing in with the knees. Almost like there is a big beach ball between my legs that I am trying to pop.

I try to feel like my feet are almost "grabbing the ground" like a bird grabbing a branch with its feet when it lands. Concentrating like this helps me to feel more connected to the ground, and as any good Wing Chun man knows - the ground is where the power comes from.

Thanks for watching my videos response! Train Hard!

  • sounds good, i practice with 2 balls...

  • once you get your pelvis into the right place don't you want to squeeze your buttocks as well as your thighs? Not like there is a beach ball between them but more like a pencil or something lol.

I do not recommend *actually* putting a pencil between your buttocks unless you want to play a really funny prank on someone.

  • Bare feet, very good point Ben. I remember Sifu z used to say grip the floor and squeeze w/your toes.

  • I like to use visualization with my students. Some people just learn better when they can visualize what they are doing.

  • Very good elaborations on the wing chun stance. Beach Ball and bird landing are great metaphors to help achieve grounding. aloha SifuZ
