Why does this version look so choppy? It's missing frames or in slow mo. Is it just he way it uploaded? Shirley had so much to say about him in her autobio. Even as an older child, she didn't understand the racial divide. While staying at a resort, he would come and rehearse with her; but could not stay like the rest of the cast. She didn't understand it at all; to her, he was family. His wedding message to her new husband:"Hurt this girl and I'll cut you up." :)Profound love on both sides.
I know! seriously? this is the way it was and it honestly wasn't all that bad in that movie. Shirley would call him "UNCLE BILLY!" People these days think of the bad instead of the GREAT!
Hollywood may have thought they needed to cut out scenes, but if you knew the South, you'd know that's not true. Your ignorance is part of what is supressing the true culture of the South. Southerners didn't ban Disney's "Song of the South"... that is the ignorance of the Yankees who see racism everywhere.
You misunderstood what I said. I'm saying the studios were ignorant - they assumed that Southerners would not want to see this or would object to it. People assume all Southerners hated minorities. Some did. Some didn't hate, but were still racist. Some were not racist. But very few would have actually found this type of scene offensive - even if the studios believed they would back then.
