  • What the... a martial artist encountering a kata not performed the way they were taught and not throwing a fit? Finally!

Katas have been passed down for thousands of years through different styles, it's only natural for a version to be different from others.

I feel the same way with Tensho. The relaxed, flowing motion allows the blood to flow naturally. It's a breathing kata, hard to breath when you're trying to tense up every part of your body and move at the same time.

  • @jamesfan10 that is a part of the point of doing that. my old sensei used a shinai (bamboo sword) with the higher level under-belts when i was doing this style. thankfully at my level i do not have to deal with that kind of training. The sensei usually or rather in my opinion should - use a amount of hardness to the level of the student otherwise it can be frustrating and iis not helping the student but defeating the student. Properly in my opinion it should be a slow build up.

  • one of my favourite things in karate was when we did the warm up exersizes (consisting of running laps and many pressups

the younger kids loved to race it and would skimp on their pressups, so junshihan would make them stay in horse stance untill everyone had finished

  • @jamesfan10 while in the basement, practice your various horse stances as deep and as long as you can handle. This will make your legs strong and build your foundation. Especially the open horse stance.

  • @naumutroi The only thing I can do is practice in my basement over and over again with LOTS of tension. And the other thing besides being a girl, is that I'm only 11 and the rest are 12 and up (it is suppose to be ages 12 and up for that class but because of how much taller and stronger I was compared to the average 11 year old girl, I was put into that class..... But, when I started, I was rather on the heavy side being 160 lbs. But now, I made it down to 145 making it a little easier. :DD

  • @naumutroi Ya, that's what I do. But the thing is, I'm one of the only girls, and not complaining or anything, but he hits us rather hardish. And, I'm only a yellow belt (it's the third out of 8 belts where I go to, white, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, brown, black the belts go) And It's rather hard to consentrate when you are constantly being knocked off guard when you're closing you're eyes and then out of no where BAM!!!!

  • White crane boxing is a southern gung fu style. In chinese it is called, Bai He Quan meaning White Crane Fist. It is the primary inspiration for the the styles Goju Ryu, Uechi Ryu and Chito Ryu. It is from Bai He Quan that we have the kata Sanchin (San Chian in chinese) and the kata, hakutsuru. You would be hard pressed to find a okinawan/japanese karate system that was not influenced in some way by Bai He Quan.

  • @jamesfan10 often the sensei will use this to test a students focus and to test the students strength of stance and hand and feet position. this also helps to toughen the student up not unlike the exercises in iron body chi gung. for the beginner of 8 months it is mostly a test of focus and concentration. the stdent is not to respond other than being a statue and focus on his stances and breathing.

  • Tensho was influenced heavily by the Southern White Crane kata called Ryokushu. Miyagi-Sensei's expression of shaolin gung fu, Baguazhang and Southern White Crane Gung Fu merged with Naha-Te created Goju-Ryu and by extention, Tensho. Like Baguazhang it is a form of moving meditation. Does it have ALL aspects of Baguazhang? No it does not. Goju Ryu as a whole does have many aspects of Baguazhang in it. Kata is more than movement it it also teaches also theory and many other things.
