As for the car being a faraday cage, that's great for its occupants. Not so much so for anything that is electrically connected to it—mostly notably, the vehicles entire electrical system.

Coils are merely more compact. Straight wires collect plenty of EM energy. This is why dipole and monopole antennae work, and are still used.

The current capacity of a wire is generally more important than its shape when it comes to getting toasted. Sure a tiny little inductor will catch an EMP and maybe burn up along with the traces that connect to it. But the 12 guage power trunks and 6 to 2 guage motor and generator windings in your car will be fine (unless it's really one mofo of a surge).

Not to mention the north-east blackout of Canada and United States in 2003.

The problem is, if some one has a nuke spare to create continent wide EMP, chances are that they're going to use that as the start of a conventional war. While strugling to recover from the 1800s even some one with a relativly unsophisticated bomber plane or tank can make your life a lot shorter.
Also, years is a long time for food distribution to have to get back in order. By then you can expect lot of people to be dead, hundreds of millions, if not billions.

to your comment about using this at the start of a war: true, it would throw the poulation into a panic, but it would hardly destabilize the fighting forces already in the field, or a decentralized command structure. I'd think it would be most useful to sneak in spec ops personnel to quietly take out the leadership without cameras, lights, or electronic security to worry about.
