From what I've read in a nutshell, they have vending machines in the story that sell small assassin robots, which are programmed to perform whatever mission the buyer wants it to accomplish, after which the robot self destructs. The protagonist is a robot called Scud, who finds out about its fate after completing a mission and decides it doesn't want to die so it keeps its target alive. That's what I've read about it so far. Good stuff.
