FYI I just found an excellent video concerning ice dams, what causes most of them and what to do about them for cheap: youtube.com/watch?v=yNHZNzVhWm

Very innovative. But it is innovation required because of poor insulation & improper gutter system for that environment. Adding insulation would likely pay for itself in lower heating costs in your case.

home made flame thrower :) just my opinion

Put the pellets in an ice melt sock and not only will it last longer, cut deeper ice channels to drain water, and keep the ice melt on the roof from sliding off, it is approved by the
Canadian Housing and Mortgage Authority.

shoot the washer fluid up with a garden / lawn sprayer (those hand 1.5 gallon pumps). I have a cheap one and it shoots about 20 ft. if I focus the stream. also if you have someone to work with.. throw sock over roof on long rope and than pull it back until the guy on the other side says stop. (no ladders needed) :-) Oh... women stockings work faster and don't stick like your socks were (although i don't know how cold it was by you when you did this). But stockings work crazy fast.

I think "Your'e as Cold as Ice" by Foreignor would be better song
There is a new product out called "ROOF PELLETS" that are sold at Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, etc. that can be thrown up on the roof. These pellets work great also. I have not seen any short term damge to the roofing materials from using any of these products. Try to clear the snow off the roof with some sort of roof rake before the snow builds up to deep. Most of the ice dams can be eliminated before they start. Good luck.

do you know if those substances damage the roof?

Good question and one I will need to ask the manufacturer of the roofing materials. It is to soon to know since this is the first season to have applied the windshield washer fluid which is bio-degradable and is used in cold climates on automobile windshields everywhere.

Remember to use Windshield Washer Fluid "NOT" anti freeze! And as was pointed out, Best to remove snow before it starts to melt. We received about 12" of snow all at once and it blocked my roof vents resulting in the ice dams. I hope this helps.

Good video
Snow rake works great.
Best to remove the snow, before it turns to ice.
Maybe your attic is releasing too much heat. Not enough insulation.
Be careful with using salt in the gutters.
Cloride is better than salt, but will eat away at your guttter.
Remove the snow, BEFORE it melts.

Thanks for the comments, notice how my roof vents were blocked from the 12" snow fall. I was slow to get out and remove the snow with the snow rake. The results were the ice dam. Hindsight as they say is 20/10. Take care.
