Maddy was awake - Briana had woken her up. She tried to go back to sleep after Briana had left the cottage, but she hadn't quite succeeded.
Might as well go for a walk, she thought, as she crawled out of her bed. She opened the closet, pulled out short shorts and a T-shirt, changed into them, and crept out the door.
Outside, the sun was already shining bright, and Maddy squinted her sleepy eyes as she walked down the stone path.
In her bed, she figured that maybe Briana had gone to spend time with Kevin. So maybe if she went down to the shore, she would be bothering the love birds' alone time.
So she followed the path into a little open space which in the middle was a small pond. Surrounding the small pond were boulders and all sorts of plants, a few butterflies fluttering around.
On one of the rocks, Maddy noticed, there was a girl sitting. Maddy walked closer and realized that the girl was Mikhayla. Mikhayla had spent the night in her own bed, which was in her own room in the main house.
Maddy sat down on one of the boulders beside Mikhayla. "Hi-ya,"
Mikhayla looked up at Maddy with a surprised face. "Hey," she said. "You're up early,"
"Well so are you," Maddy replied with a smile.
Maybe this was her chance - her chance to ask about Mikhayla and Joe, for Olivia.
"Do... Do you mind me asking you something?" Maddy asked. "It might be a little personal,"
"Shoot," Mikhayla smiled.
"Uhhhhhm... Do you, well, you know... like Joe?" Maddy asked slowly, checking the expression on Mikhayla's face. "Like, 'like' like?"
Whoa, Maddy thought to herself. That's the first time she'd made a sentence with only repeating one word three times.
"Well," Mikhayla pushed a bit of hair that was falling into her eyes behind her ear. "Can you keep a secret?"
Maddy nodded.
"I've always liked Joseph." Mikhayla said as she tapped her fingers on the boulder. Maddy could tell she was a bit nervous. "I was so jealous when he started going out with Mandy, and even wrote a song for her!"
Maddy nodded as she listened. So she DID like Joe! But was she trying to steal him?
"I still do like him, but he's so in love with Olivia." She sighed.
"So, you... you still want to be his girlfriend?"
"Well, yeah, but..." Mikhayla shrugged as she searched for the right words. "I can't just come and steal somebody's boyfriend, now can I?"
"I know how you feel..." Maddy said, thinking about Nick and Gabby. Perhaps, Maddy noticed, she and Mikhayla were currently in the same position; liking someone who already has a girlfriend.
Maddy suddenly felt the urge to tell someone about the night before... about The Kiss.
"Uh, Mihykayla?" Maddy shifted on her boulder. "Can I tell you something? A secret?"
"Sure," Mikhayla smiled.
Maddy told her about the Valentine's Dance, Jerry, The Kiss, how she figured out Jerry was Nick...
"...What am I supposed to do now?" Maddy asked after she finished telling the story. "Now that I know Nick was Jerry from the dance... I..." Her voice trailed off.
"You... what?" Mikhayla asked softly.
"I think that now I can clearly say that..." Maddy bit her bottom lip. "I love him,"
Suddenly, tears started gushing from her eyes.
She loved Nick.
She loved him.
And she was NOT starstruck.
The night of the V-Day dance, Maddy had developed a little crush on Jerry. Or Nick. Whoever he was.
All this time, ever since after using Nick to get to Joe, she thought she'd sort of 'like' liked him, but she wasn't exactly sure.
Now, she was sure enough to tell it to the world.
"What am I supposed to do, Mikhayla?" Maddy asked again, tears still running down her cheeks. "I love him, but he's with Gabby... But..."
Mikhayla didn't speak for a while as she searched for the right words. After a while, she finally opened her mouth.
"If you love him," She said. "Wouldn't you want him to be happy?"
Maddy's stopped crying for a second.
"I mean, I've loved Joseph for who knows how many years, and sure, I'd gone out with him once, but he didn't seem to be that happy." Mikhayla continued. "He never smiled with me like he smiled when he was with Mandy."
"I'm sorry..." Maddy squeaked.
"No, don't be," Mikhayla smiled. "And after we broke up, even though I still love him, I figured, what would matter if HE was miserable? I would want for him to be happy, to be with the one HE loves, even if that means he'll never be with me." She bit her bottom lip as if to keep from crying. "Wouldn't you want that for Nicholas?"
Maddy nodded. "Yeah... I do. Thanks."
"Don't mention it," Mikhayla smiled. God, her smile was so comforting. It was warm... but still, there was something so sad about it.
"By the way, Mikhayla?" Maddy said, sniffling. "It's okay to cry when you feel like it."
Then without another word, Mikhayla's smile turned into gushing tears.
