  • Who is playing and singing? It would be nice to know name of orchestra and choir.

btw the original work is without strings (horns and cornetti), and even more beautiful

  • It's amazing how these late ones are so much more developed compared to the ones from the early 20s. Those are good as well but this here is beautiful

  • Harmony at it's finest - beautiful singing here, too.

Only Bach could write a really slow 9 minute piece and its never boring.

  • @elsiejohn It's MORE than OK to use oboes if your orchestra does not have horns....not everyone has the money to hire all players needed and intruments....all I care about is that the performance IS historically informed and the playing is sublime...the singing is also in the style..great recording!

Thank you so much for this information! It is very kind of you to respond.

  • @elsiejohn

The version without strings was composed so that the insturmentalists could walk along in the funeral march,

  • @redbrian3655 It's so nice to hear the thoughts of a contemporary composer and musician. I love the Julia Fischer quote, thanks so much for sharing. May your music outlast us :-) Bill

  • @SFOtter Well said! Violinist Julia Fischer says,"I love authentic interpretation; BUT I also am playing for the 21st Century." I absolutely believe in scholarship and musicology; but when we argue about it and forget the music itself, we do ourselves and Bach a disservice. As a Church composer, I have to utilize what is available to me. If in years to come someone wants to improve or re-interpret me, PLEASE let them. They will probably have MORE MONEY!! Ha. BRIAN

  • Thou Art Lord my Christ Jesus.

  • We performed this lovely work in H.S. accompanied by trumpets. I really don't care about HIP standards since the scholarship is sketchy and Bach's music is so sublime it lends itself to a variety of interpretive styles and instrumentation. Besides, who knows what Bach himself would want today given the improvements in instruments and increased variety of orchestral textures available today. Let's skip the pedantry and simply enjoy the magnificent spiritually informed music

  • I absolutely loved it. This is one of my all time favorite Cantatas. I want this sung at my funeral please.
