We get an up-and-close and obvious look at how much different (and more sophisticated) electronics control systems are in EVs compared with internal-combustion-engine cars.
GM says the Volt only uses 2/3 of the battery's capacity, others say its even less. They claim this is to ensure the battery's longevity. My guess is that as the car reaches the battery's warranty and people begin bringing these in for replacement GM will either replace a computer chip or use OnStar to give access to the entire battery's capacity, thus increasing range to its original state.
