  • One of the forgotten greats are the Plane. They had all the ingredients, different styles that swung together. Pioneers too, let's not forget too. Nicky Hopkins was their icing on their cake at this gig. What a player. And they came out at dawn and did this! Amazing.

  • Kind of rough and anarchic, but this was the song that Airplane used as their set opener that season, and everybody was getting their feel for the stage. By their 2nd or 3rd song they'd usually get in tune and hit their stride, which at Woodstock they certainly accomplished. That's how shows were back then.

  • Is there any footage of this performance anywhere?

  • @andy23822 There were seven California Bands that played before the Airplane, so what exactly do you mean?

  • @jagfug I have Nicky Hopkins playing on about 20 to 30 cds in my collection. You're not telling something I don't already know!

It was a shame that his playing was too far back in the recording mix at times during the Airplane's gig here at Woodstock though. But you can still hear enough of him playing his ass off.

  • @jakeenan I knew Nicky Hopkins played with the Stones on many a great tune, and John Lennon's Imagine, but do yourself a favor. Google his name and check the Wikipedia page on him. The guy is a true unsung hero of some of our favorite groups!

  • One word: EXPLOSION

  • No, not the greatest American rock and roll band, but worth listening to. They will tell you the same.

Did have some talent, however, such as Marty Balin.

  • one of fred neil's masterpiece songs(also covered well by the lovin' spoonful.....he also wrote 'the dolphins', &...'everybody's talkin'(the theme from 'midnight cowboy').god blessm'im. marty & the grace just tearin it up at dawn!!!

  • Good Morning People!!!!!!!!!!!
