Here is my 1902 front mount Zonophone Concert Grand Phonograph with original nickel horn manufactured by The Uniiversal Talking Machine Company playing "Darktown Campmeetin' Experiences" recorded by The Victor Vaudeville Company on a 12 inch Victor Talking Machine Company label. Prominent in the recording we can clearly hear Arthur Collins, Albert Campbell and Byron Harlan throughout much of the recording. The recording represents early Black American humor and my sole purpose for posting was to share it as a historical representation of such. The recording is actually quite humorous and has for many years been a favorite of mine for listening. I hope you enjoy the Zonophone as well as the early recording and I thank you for stopping in for a visit.

  • What a fun recording! It would be interesting to know if the jokes in records such as this one were taken from minstrel and vaudeville shows.

  • @EdisonSquirrel Thanks Rocky! Good to hear from you. I would imagine that some of the material was original and some was from contemporary minstrel shows.

  • such a decorative machine, how much would it usually cost for a front mount machine like this, not just zonophone but any make. but the zonophone is a fantastic addition to your collection, did santa bring you it?!

  • @kirtley2010 Thanks for your comments. I purchased this Zonophone a while ago so it was not a Christmas gift. The front mount phonographs are, in general, the earliest models and as such they are, again generally, more desireable than the later rear mount machines. Although I must admit that the rear mount machines exert much less weight (and therefore wear) on the record and are much easier to move around. Cost can vary greatly and is relative to your location and availability.

  • a really beautiful phonograph.happy healthy new year and heres to many more great videos in 2012!

  • @chompo7 Thank you chompo! Always a pleasure to see a comment from you. Happy New Year to you too !

  • Thank you for the very fine blast from the past!!!

  • @MusicBoxBoy non the less though they are good machines, the sound quality from this one would rival much later machines, i personally really enjoy it when i get record related items for christmas or birthdays, this year i only got 2 cylinders but one i have wanted for ages, still no phonograph but that will come in time, i am currently in the middle of a deal buying a hmv model 31 allthough it is needing restoration i am getting it at a decent price and i am really looking forward to owning it!
