A rare recording of Joseph Jongen's piano concerto. Here is the final movement - 'Allegro giocoso'
Recorded c. 1954

Piano: Eduardo del Pueyo
with the Orchestra National de Belgique, conducted by Fernand Quinet

  • probably one of the most underrated and neglected composers of the last century. Screw Stravinsky and Schoenberg. This is where it's at. A master of form and color. Delicious music.

  • A master orchestator too, from what I've heard - thanks for your comment.

  • I adore Jongen's works and as with all really yummy stuff, it's left to gather dust in the archives of history.

    We need more Jongen, asap.

His string writing is quite luscious yet he can produce a piano lounge sonority at the flick of a switch.

  • Thanks for your comment - I agree, more Jongen needs to be recorded. I understand he destroyed over 200 works, but those he left us (that I've heard anyway) deserve all the attention they can get!

  • grazie!!!

  • sei il benvenuto (excuse my Italian!)

  • I wish his String Quartet 2 was on youtube.

  • Yes, JJ was very good with concertante works -- the ones for organ, cello, harp, and piano here, are all quite good. Thankfully, we now have some very good new recordings on the Belgian CD label Cypres. However, I think we're still waiting on a new one of this Piano Concerto. Until then, this one with Pueyo and Quinet will suffice nicely. Thanks for posting it to YouTube, where more people can be exposed to this composer's many musical charms.

  • Amen!!!!

Why don't conductors program this man's music! Isn't it simply gorgeous!
