Supertone 5707 "Red Hot Charleston" played by James Blythe on my 1912 Stroud Metrostyle-Themodist player piano. There is some interesting chord work in the left hand, where the 10th of a rolled chord is held out longer than the rest, giving an interesting sustain effect. The lyrics didn't seem to record well on my digital camera (sorry!), but most of it is refering to dance steps of a more "low down" version of the Charleston. I added the audio from a simulatneous digital recording on my laptop. This is one of my favorite Jimmy Blythe rolls and I hope you enjoy!

  • Does this roll have soft pedal performations? , im just curious what the holes do ,that are on the extreme right of the roll?...many thanks Dan :)

  • Hi Dan,

From what I've been told by a friend who is a history buff, supertone/columbia/capitol rolls have the holes to sync up the performance with the lyrics. These used a special machine, I don't know how it worked exactly, but it would stamp the next set of lyrics when the perforation was triggered. They even advertised this on some columbia rolls as a "new synchronized process" or something around those lines.

  • Have you considered getting this roll recut?

  • Hi,

Yes I'd love to have this roll recut, but I'm not able to fund a significant recut project (what I consider about 20-30 copies) right now.
